Decide what you are actually selling

Most stalled membership sites stall here rather than on the technical setup. "Access to my content" is not a proposition anyone recognises; "a weekly teardown of a real campaign, with the spreadsheet" is.

Write the promise as a single sentence before you touch the plugin. It determines your tier structure, your pricing, and what has to exist on day one — and it is much cheaper to change a sentence than a live billing configuration.

Choose your tier structure

Start with fewer tiers than you think you need. Two or three is almost always right: one free or entry tier to build trust, one core paid tier that most members buy, and optionally one high-tier for people who want access to you directly.

Every extra tier multiplies the access rules you have to reason about, and every tier boundary is a decision you are asking a visitor to make on the pricing page. Both costs are real.

Set up the plugin

With the structure decided, the mechanical part is short. Work in this order so nothing depends on something that does not exist yet.

Create your membership levels, with pricing and billing interval per level.
Connect Stripe or PayPal and place a test order end to end.
Apply access rules to the content each level should unlock.
Publish a pricing page listing the levels and what each includes.
Sign up as a member yourself, in an incognito window, and confirm you see exactly what you expected.

Launch before it is finished

A membership site with four pieces of content and ten members teaches you more than another two months of building teaches you. The founding members will tell you what to make next, which is information you cannot get any other way.

Price the first cohort lower and say plainly that it is an early rate. This gives you a reason to reach out, and gives them a reason to forgive the rough edges.
